President Mohamed Waheed has sent condolences following the demise of former Foreign Minister Fathuhulla Jameel.

The President telephoned late Fathuhulla Jameel’s brother, Abdulla Jameel and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He said he was greatly saddened to hear of the passing away of Fathuhulla Jameel.

Late Fathuhulla Jameel served as the Maldives Foreign Minister for over 27 years. Other posts he served include teacher at Majeedhiya Schoo, Maldives Permanent Representative at the UN and Deputy at the Department of External Affairs, Minister of State for Planning and Environment. He also served as Member of People’s Majlis appointed by the President.

President Ibrahim Nasir appointed him as the Minister of External Affairs on March 14, 1978. When President Gayoom assumed office on November 11, 1978, he appointed Fathuhulla Jameel as his Foreign Minister. He continued in this post till his resignation on July 14, 2005. After his resignation as Foreign Minister, he was appointed as Special Adviser to the President. Later he became Senior Minister at the President’s Office.

Late Fathuhulla Jameel was conferred the Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzuddeen by President Gayoom. Former President Mohamed Nasheed also awarded him the ‘State Dignitary’ title.

Fathuhulla Jameel died Thursday at Singapore General Hospital from a heart disease. He was 69.
