The cabinet has today decided to lease two uninhabited islands to be developed into tourist resorts, to the party that operates the Kolhumadulu Thimarafushi Domestic Airport. The decision was made at today’s cabinet meeting.

The reclamation of 31 hectares of land for the construction of the Thimarafushi Airport, which is being carried out by the government, has been completed last year.

Cabinet members also discussed the high cost of airport development. They noted that leasing uninhabited islands for resort development would help cost recovery, contribute to the industrial growth of the region, as well as increase job opportunities.
