In this week's radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed announced that the government would set up representative offices of the government in each administrative region to align local councils and the government.

He said the province offices already established in each administrative province would act as the government representatives in their respective region.

In the first radio address after Saturday's local council elections held in the country, the President outlined the arrangements that the government need to make in order to consolidate local governance as envisaged by the Constitution and the Decentralization Act.

Referring to the Article 71 of the Decentralization Act, which defines the national institutions that should be established to enable decentralized administration of the atolls, the President said an institution should be set up in each atoll to represent the national authority on decentralization.

He said the institution would represent the government in the atolls and facilitate coordination between the government and local councils on national issues and government policies.

The President expressed his confidence that all administrative arrangements, including the appointment of Local Government Authority, would be finalized before the newly elected councillors take the oath of their office.

Further, he reiterated his confidence that all the elected councillors would work for the development of their constituencies.

Recalling the result of the first ever local council elections held in the country on Saturday, the President asserted that the election results reaffirmed the people's support for the government policies.

In addition, President Nasheed underscored that Maldivian National University, the first university in the country, would be unveiled this week.

He said the establishment of a university and local councils for the first time in the country confirmed that the country was on the right path to realize people's aspirations for the development and to secure the success of the future generations.
