President Mohamed Nasheed has commended the role of independent institutions to ensure that the first ever local council elections on February 5 were peaceful.

 
In a press statement issued by the President’s Office today, the President noted that the elections were held in a peaceful and competitive environment without major incidents.
 

He applauded preparations for the elections by the Elections Commission, and the role of the Maldives Police Service, leadership and members of two main political parties, state authorities and the civil society to create a peaceful environment for the elections.
