Reflecting on the 2010 results of General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level Examinations (GCE O Level) in this week’s radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed has said the government was encouraged by the overall improvement in the results.

 
He stated that the number of students who passed five subjects in the exam increased by 8 percent over the past two years.
 
Stating that only 27 percent of the students passed five subjects in GCE O Level exam prior to 2008, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to increase this proportion to at least 60 percent.
 
The President said the government’s efforts over the past two years to improve the academic standard of students who finish school have begun to pay off.
 
He noted that number of students who passed 5 subjects increased in 2009 by 5 percent, while this proportion increased in 2010 by a further 3 percent.
 
In addition, the President emphasized that 100 schools improved their individual performance in 2010, compared to 2009.
 
Highlighting the improvements in students’ performance in GCE O Level exam in 2010, the President congratulated the students who obtained pass grades in five subjects, and especially noted the performance of students who achieved the highest grades in their subjects.
 
He also congratulated the efforts of schools and parents in preparing the students for the exams.
 
Especially, the President applauded the work of former Minister of Education Dr Musthafa Lutfee and current Minister of Education Shifa Mohamed for their efforts to revamp the country’s education system.
 
In this week’s radio address that was broadcast this morning, the President also spoke on the success of the Cabinet meeting held in Kulhudhuffushi on Tuesday.
 
This was the first time a Cabinet meeting was held out of Malé.
