The Cabinet has today decided to launch more projects under 'Veshi Fahi Malé’ Programme.

‘Veshi Fahi Malé’ programme initiated by Malé Municipality, aims to combine the development of Malé, Vilingili, Gulhi Falhu, Thilafushi, Hulhumalé and Malé International Airport to decongest Malé.

New projects that were decided by the Cabinet today are as follows.

Development of a container terminal or container park at Thilafushi

After discussing the project, the Cabinet decided to hold consultations with all stakeholders and divert clearing of some cargo to Thilafushi.

This project will release substantial land in Malé for purposes other than warehousing, alleviate congestion and road blockade during loading and unloading, and decongest Malé.

This project is also aimed at reducing land rent in Malé and fostering faster industrialization of Thilafushi.

Development of a light industrial park in Vilingili

It was decided to build the park away from the school and the health centre, and fecilitate greater access to the park.

The purpose built industrial park will provide common services required by the tenants cheaper and provide space for lower rentals for commercial and industrial activities.

This park will also increase the employment opportunities available, especially in Vilingili.

Outsourcing T-Jetty Management

The Cabinet also today decided to outsource management of T-Jetty at Malé South West Commercial Harbour and other commercial harbours currently managed by Malé Municipality to Maldives Ports Authority.

This decision is expected to increase the efficiency of operations of harbours while decongesting harbours and areas around harbours.

Efficient management of ports will translate to boat owners in terms of cost saving as a result of less time spent in loading and unloading.

Development of Malé Local Market

At today’s meeting, the Cabinet also agreed to proceed with the development of Malé Local Market, and decided to construct a multi purpose building in the Malé water fitted with modern facilities.

This project will ease the current pent up demand for small selling spaces, and stop unauthorised selling by the pavement hawkers.

This building will also provide a proper ambient market for the residents of Malé, and provide a market for local produce.
