President Mohamed Nasheed has appointed a Presidential Commission to investigate complaints of torture and unlawful acts within the Police Service. The members of the Commission are Mr Ameen Faisal, Mr Ali Hashim, Mr Mohamed Aslam, Uza Hisaan Hussain and Uz Ibrahim Rif’ath.
The tasks assigned for the commission by the President include:
(a) Investigate complaints of torture, and other cruel and degrading treatment or punishment, and present a report to the President
(b) Oversee whether the Maldives Police Service abides by the Constitution, law and regulations of the country, and identify and present a report to the President on the correction measures that can be taken
(c) Review the measures needed for strengthening the management of the Maldives Police Service, and present a report to the President on the immediate measures that can be taken
The Commission has been constituted to function as an independent body.
