President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a message of condolence to the President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, following the demise of veteran vocalist, musician and composer, Mr. Pandith W. D. Amaradewa.

The President’s message reads as follows:

“I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing away of veteran vocalist, musician and composer, Mr. Pandith W. D. Amaradewa. A highly distinguished and acclaimed musician in his own country, Sri Lanka, Mr. Amaradewa’s contribution to the national identity of the Maldives by composing the music for the Maldivian National Anthem in 1972 will be fondly remembered by generations of Maldivians, present and future.”

“At this time of national grief, the Government and the people of Maldives join me in extending sincere condolences and profound sympathy to the bereaved members of his family, Your Excellency, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.”

“May he rest in eternal peace.”
