Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed today met Bangladeshi High Commissioner to the Maldives Rear Admiral Abu Saeed Mohamed Abdul Awal.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, Vice President Dr Waheed expressed concern over the death of a Bangladeshi worker in Male’ on 22 November after he was stabbed during what was believed to be an attempted mugging.

The Vice President also said the President was concerned over the incident and conveyed his sympathy.

He asserted the government’s commitment to carry out a complete and speedy investigation of the incident.

Noting the immense contributions of Bangladeshi expatriate workforce in the Maldives to the country’s economy, the Vice President and High Commissioner Awal discussed necessary steps to address the issues related to expatriates working in the Maldives.

High Commissioner Awal informed the Vice President of his recommendations and measures he has proposed to different government departments to ensure that Bangladeshi’s entering the Maldives fulfil the legal requirements to enter the county for employment.

The Vice President and the High Commissioner also highlighted the discussions between both countries to strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries in more areas. In this regard, they noted the efforts by the two governments to increase cooperation in the field of education and cultural exchanges.
