President Mohamed Nasheed has departed for Britain this morning.

The main purpose of his visit is to address the Oxford Union, which is one of the oldest debating societies in Britain. The Oxford Union had, in the past, hosted a number of prominent leaders such as Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, former US Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.

During his visit, the President will also meet with officials of UK government and discuss issues of mutual concern.

The President will also use the opportunity to call for a comprehensive and balanced climate package as countries gather in Cancun next week.
