President Mohamed Nasheed has said reducing the extent of drug abuse as much as possible remains a top priority of the government. Speaking at a function organised by local NGO Journey on Monday evening to mark their 5th anniversary, the President said society-wide approach was required to address the issue.

While complete eradication of drug abuse, he said, was difficult, the government aimed to reduce drug usage in the society as much as possible. He added, “I believe we can do this. I believe we have the capacity. I believe our youths can recover from this.”

The President discussed government’s efforts during the past two years toward fulfilling its key pledge of closing doors open for drugs. He noted that as a result of those efforts, there was noticeable reduction of drug trafficking today.

At the function, the President also inaugurated Journey Drop-In centre.

Journey is a non-government organisation formed by a group of recovering addicts with the aim to help other addicts to recover from addiction.
