Speaking at a function held on Monday evening to mark the 5th anniversary of Journey and the inauguration of Journey Drop-In Centre, President Mohamed Nasheed said reducing substance abuse among Maldivians youths was a top priority of the government.

He said while there was no single approach to tackle the problem, addressing all social issues in the society was necessary to combat drug addiction.

President further added that though complete eradication of drug abuse was not possible within a few years, the government’s goal was to reduce drug usage in the society.

“I believe we can do this. I believe we have the capacity. I believe our youths can recover from this”, he said.

Prevention of drug abuse and trafficking is one of the key pledges of the government.

The President said, the reason why it is a key pledge is because his administration understood that it was an issue that required immediate focus.

Continuing in this regard, the President said with the work done during the past couple of years, drug trafficking into the country has now considerably reduced.

Journey is a non-government organisation formed by a group of recovering addicts with the aim to help other addicts to recover from addiction.
