President Mohamed Nasheed today laid the foundation stone of the 1000 housing units to be built in Hulhumalé under the government´s pledge to provide affordable housing for Maldivians.

1000 housing units unveiled in Hulhumalé today are a part of housing units to be build under an agreement between the government and the Chinese government.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held at Hulhumalé this afternoon, the President said Maldivians had significant challenges in building or owning adequate housing. He said these challenges hindered the overall development of the country.

Underscoring the government´s commitment to provide affordable housing for Maldivians, the President said the objective of the government´s housing pledge was enabling Maldivians to overcome the hurdles in accessing housing which was crucial for national development.

The President also reiterated the assurance of delivering the government´s pledges on time despite many hurdles the government had in its path towards achieving its goals.

In addition, the President also highlighted on the success of the government´s economic policy.

He said, in spite of the political backlash over the government´s economic recovery efforts, the government was able to stabilize the country´s macroeconomic fundamentals and significantly increased the national productivity.
