President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that the government intended to bestow a special honour or a title on the individuals who have served the country for a long period of time to recognize their distinguished services to the people and the nation.

In his address to the nation at the official Republic Day ceremony this morning, President Nasheed spoke on the importance of recognizing the long and illustrious services many Maldivians have rendered to the country.

The President revealed that the National Awards Committee was working to formulate a standard for bestowing a special honour or title in recognition of services of such individuals to the country.

In his address today, the President said every recipient of National Awards today, were worthy of the award they received, and the country continues to receive their invaluable services.

He also noted the work of the National Awards Committee to select the winners of this year’s awards.
