President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with Prime Minister of Singapore Mr Lee Hsien Loong. The meeting was after the ceremony held at the official residence of the Singaporean President to officially welcome President Nasheed to Singapore.

Speaking at the meeting, the President said the close friendly relations that exist between the Maldives and Singapore had continuously strengthened over the years. The President expressed his appreciation for the continued Singaporean assistance to the development of the Maldives.

Noting the government’s commitment to consolidate democracy, the President sought Singaporean assistance to strengthen the justice system and other institutions of the Maldives.

Prime Minister Lee also highlighted the close relations that exist between Singapore and the Maldives. He said the school built in Hulhumale’ by the Singaporean government, and desalination plants donated by Singapore were symbols of these close relations that exist between both countries.

Prime Minister Lee hosted an official luncheon in President Nasheed’s honour this afternoon. Speaking at the luncheon, the President noted that Singapore was an important economic partner of the Maldives and the economic relationship between both countries go back more than 70 years. The President also said Maldives aspire to be a country like Singapore.
