Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed last night departed for Bhutan to participate in a democracy conference.

The conference entitled, “International Conference on Deepening and Sustaining Democracy in Asia”, is being jointly organized by the government of Bhutan and United Nations Development Programme. The conference will be held from 12-14 October.

Speaking to the media before his departure, the Vice President said the key purpose of the conference was to discuss South Asia region’s democratic experience. He also said that he would discuss the challenges in consolidating and sustaining democracy in the Maldives and on ways to overcome those challenges.

The Vice President is also scheduled to hold meetings with senior officials of the Bhutanese government.
