Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has launched the web portal for “Mapping Maldives and Climate Change” project.
The web portal was launched during the “Final Symposium: Mapping of Maldives and Climate Change” project held at Bandos Island Resort and Spa today.
Speaking at the symposium the Vice President urged the government agencies and technical teams to utilize the application in the best way, for the development of the country.
He said the project has provided very important data in moving forward with the Maldives’ developmental goals and noted detailed maps or data of the physical geography of the country until now.
The Vice President conveyed his gratitude to the Ministry of Housing and Environment, Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) and Groupe FIT, for initiating this valuable project.
Vice president Dr Mohamed Waheed underscored the obstacles in coming to the desired agreement between countries, on issues related to global climate change. Speaking in this regard, he reiterated that the Maldives might face grave consequences in the next 50 or 100 years, if the emission reduction targets were not reached.
Noting that the Maldives’ fate lies in the hands of the first world countries, the Vice President reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to carbon neutrality goal although it would have no impact on global emissions.
Mapping of the Maldives and Climate Change project, under a grant of 1.5 Million Euros from the AFD, is aimed at developing a large scale map of the Maldives, with detailed environmental data, and to establish indicators to monitor climate change. These indicators will enable study of the changes brought to the island geomorphology and the reef environment due to climate change in the future.
