Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has last night, returned to Male’ after concluding his visit to Australia.

The main purpose of his visit to Australia was to participate in the 2009 Australian National Carbon Conference. The Conference was held on 27th and 28th of August in Brisbane and it brought together industry leaders, policy makers and eminent academics, to discuss the emerging carbon economy.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Waheed said that we must do everything possible to stop global warming not because it was good for the economy or politics, but because it was the right thing.

During the visit, Vice President met with Australian Parliamentary Secretary for International Development, Mr Bob McMullan. During the meeting Mr McMullan said Australia would increase the number of scholarships to the Maldives. Dr Waheed also met with Australian Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Natural resources, Water & Energy and Minister for Trade, Mr Michael Choi and Australian Ambassador for Climate Change Ms Louise Hand.

Dr Waheed met with representatives of up to 10 companies specialising in green energy solutions to address climate change. In addition, Vice President also met with representatives of the University of Southern Queensland (USC) and the Queensland Institute of Technology.
