At the cabinet meeting held today, the members discussed government’s policy on land reclamation.

Members noted that reclamation of land had been widely adopted in the Maldives over the years to create inhabited islands, industrial islands as well as resort islands. The cabinet, therefore, agreed that a sound policy on land reclamation was necessary for the formulation of developmental plans.

It was decided at the meeting, to form a cabinet sub-committee to further discuss the matter and to put forward suggestions. The members of the committee are Minister of Housing, Transport and Environment, Mr Mohamed Aslam; Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Ahmed Ali Sawad; Minister of Finance and Treasury, Mr Ali Hashim; Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr Ibrahim Didi; and, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Ahmed Shaheed.
