Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today met with the International Labour Organisation’s mission, currently visiting the Maldives. The mission is headed by ILO Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Ms Tine Staermose.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Waheed noted that the Maldives became a member of ILO recently and there were a number of labour relations issues that needs to be addressed to strengthen the labour relations framework in the Maldives.

Dr Waheed sought ILO’s technical assistance to establish the legislative framework for labour relations issues, and said that it is vital to ensure the rights of the people enshrined in the Constitution. He also said that the Maldives Labour Relations Authority and the Labour Tribunal requires further assistance.

At the meeting, Ms Staermose said that ILO was committed to assist the Maldives to strengthen the labour relations framework. She also said that ILO would help identify and resolve the issues between the employers and the employees.

ILO Country Director assured the Vice President that the ILO would provide all the support to the government to fully comply with ILO standards of labour relations.

The objective of the current mission of ILO in the Maldives is to provide assistance to the Maldives as a new member of the ILO, in providing technical assistance to the basic labour market institutions and its stakeholders.
