Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the government gives very high priority to strengthen the interest in the Holy Quran in the Maldives. He made the statement, speaking at the awarding ceremony of the 24th National Quran Recitation Competition held at Dharubaaruge.

At the last evening’s function, Dr Waheed acknowledged the keenness of schools, Quran classes, private organisation, parents and students to develop the skills of eloquent recitation of the Holy Quran. Further, he said that the government would provide assistance to promote their efforts in every possible way.

Noting the Holy Quran is the Divine law, Dr Waheed stressed the eminence we should give to the Holy Quran.

The Vice President said the Holy Quran is now taught as a separate subject in schools. Noting the lack of trained Quran teachers, the Vice President said the government is making special efforts to train more Quran teachers.

In his address at the function, Dr Waheed rejoiced at the fact that students from the atolls and female students were given better opportunities to participate in this year’s competition.

At the function, Vice President Dr Waheed awarded the certificate to Enas Fursaan, who memorised the entire Holy Quran at the age of 10.
