Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has stated that the US firm, EMGlobal, has expressed interest in setting-up a rehabilitation centre in the Maldives. Dr Waheed made this announcement while speaking at a press conference to brief the media on his recent visit to the United States. The Press conference was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

Dr Waheed also informed the media on the discussions he held during his meetings with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dr Waheed said that all of them had commended the Maldives’ plan to become carbon neutral and had assured the government that they would assist the Maldives in this endeavour.

Elaborating on his meeting with the UN Secretary General, Dr Waheed said at the meeting discussions were focused on the Maldives’ graduation from LDC status. He further said that Secretary General had assured that the UN would provide the Maldives with the technical assistance in preparation for Maldives’ graduation.

Noting that California is world’s 7th largest economy, Dr Waheed said Governor Schwarzenegger had said that California would provide the Maldives with capacity building and technological assistance in various areas, especially in the area of renewable energy and environment.
