President Mohamed Nasheed has invited Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia to visit the Maldives at a convenient time. The President extended this invitation to Dr. Mahathir, in a letter handed over by the Maldivian High Commissioner-designate in Malaysia H.E. Mohamad Zaki.

During the courtesy call held today at Perdana Leadership Foundation, Putrajaya, H.E Mohamed Zaki briefed the former Prime Minister on the political and economic developments in the Maldives and highlighted on the country’s transition to a democracy. He also highlighted on the longstanding friendship and close socioeconomic cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia.

H.E Mohamed Zaki mentioned to the former Prime Minister that the Maldives considers the exemplary socioeconomic development of Malaysia as a model worthy of emulation by other developing countries.

The High Commissioner also extended, on behalf of the President of Maldives, an invitation to the former Prime Minister to visit the Maldives at a time convenient to the latter.
Dr. Mahathir Mohamed conveyed his good wishes to the President and people of Maldives and thanked President Mohamed Nasheed for the invitation.

The former Prime Minister also advised the High Commissioner on opportunities the government of Maldives could utilize for socioeconomic development and highlighted on avenues available in Malaysia to enhance the close collaboration between the two countries, particularly in the field of human resource development.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 – 2003 who is widely credited for engineering Malaysia's rapid economic development and modernization, is currently the head of Perdana Leadership Foundation.
