President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday ratified the first amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act (Law no. 8/2020). Parliament passed the bill at its 35th sitting of the first session on Monday, April 25, 2022.

The amendment repealed and restructured some sections of the legislation. It added two subsections to Section 11, which entail quality assurance measures such as consulting with experts when designing sewerage systems. The bill also added subsections to Section 54 of the law, allowing authorities to impose fines on contractors for failing to adhere to standards set in the law. The penalties could range from MVR 500 to MVR 1 million.

Upon ratification, the amendment is published in the Government Gazette.
