President Mohamed Nasheed has said that during his days of incarceration, his dream was about bringing a better life for the people of the Maldives. The President made this statement during an interview to the Talk to Aljazeera show hosted by Stephen Cole.

Pointing out that democracy had been established through many sacrifices, the President said that a lot of work still needed to be done to consolidate and sustain democracy in the Maldives.
Speaking on the effect of climate change on the Maldives, the President said “if the people of the Maldives ever want to move from where they live now, we, today, should be able to start a process that would help them in the future.”

He further said that if such a scenario occurs, where the population of the Maldives are forced to migrate to another place, he would be “the last one to leave”.

Before concluding the interview, Mr Stephen Cole said that President Nasheed has been described as the “Obama of Asia”.
