President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih returned to Malé on Saturday afternoon after a two-day visit to Gaafaru Island in the Kaafu Atoll to commemorate the 41st National Fishermen's Day. He was accompanied by Vice President Faisal Naseem.

During the visit, President Solih inaugurated a 25-tonne ice plant developed on the island. The MVR 3.5 million project also saw the development of a 50-tonne cold storage.

As part of the activities, the President attended a fish filleting contest and visited the Fisheries Expo organised by the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture. The Vice President unveiled a monument placed in the harbour area.

At the official function held to mark the occasion, President Solih spoke in depth about the administration’s vision to elevate and develop the fisheries sector. During the visit, the President also met with yellowfin tuna fishermen and the fishing community of Gaafaru Island.

This morning, he spoke with the members of the Gaafaru Island Council and Women's Development Committee about the developmental plans for the island. He also visited the health centre and police post this morning.

Fishermen's Day is marked every year on the 10th of December.
