President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday afternoon inaugurated a 25-tonne ice plant developed on Gaafaru Island in the Kaafu Atoll. He is on Gaafaru Island to take part in activities to mark the 41st National Fishermen’s Day. Vice President Faisal Naseem is accompanying the President on the visit.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture commissioned the MVR 3.5 million project to build the ice plant, accompanied by a 50-tonne cold storage, to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

Afterwards, the President and Vice President watched a fish filleting contest. The Vice President also unveiled a monument placed in the harbour area, which symbolises the friendly and hospitable nature of the fishing community.

The Fisheries Ministry is also holding a Fisheries Expo as part of the celebrations. While touring the exposition, the President launched five new products by MIFCO.
