President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Friday afternoon, while en route to Gaafaru Island in the Kaafu Atoll, joined the fleet of fishing vessels gathered near Gulhifalhu to voice the concerns of the fishermen. He was travelling to Gaafaru Island to join celebrations of the 41st National Fishermen’s Day. The fishermen were attending a gathering at sea, organised by the Trade Union for Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen, to express their grievances and concerns over the sector.

In his meeting with the members of the union and the fishermen, the members shared with the President, information about some of the difficulties and challenges they are facing. Some of the issues raised by the members include difficulties in using the harbour of Male, concerns over the floor price for yellowfin tuna, and a lack of legislation governing the sector. They also expressed their gratitude for the government’s decision to lower the price of ice.

Speaking with them, President Solih extended warm wishes on the occasion of the day and of International Human Rights Day, which are observed on the 10th of December. On the topic of the Covid-19 pandemic, President Solih emphasised the role played by fishermen and other industry stakeholders towards economic development.

The President also briefed them on the government’s plans to expand the fishing sector and efforts to provide fair prices. He further assured them of the government’s continued commitment to engage with the fishing community, especially in policy-making stages.

Addressing their concerns about the lack of relevant legislation, President Solih stated that bills on industrial relations and occupational safety had been drafted. He assured them that the government would push for Parliament to pass the bills in the coming session.
