The United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) Resident Representative to the Republic of the Maldives, Dr M. Munir A. Safieldin, paid his farewell call on First Lady Fazna Ahmed this morning. The call was held at Mulee'aage, the Presidential Residence.

The First Lady and Resident Representative held lengthy discussions during the meeting regarding the collaborative work being undertaken by the Government and UNICEF towards safeguarding the rights of children. The discussions centred on enhancing ongoing programmes aimed at strengthening the rights and freedoms of young girls.

Speaking during the call, the First Lady extended her appreciation to Dr Safieldin for his passion and dedication during his tenure as the UNICEF Resident Representative to the Maldives. First Lady Fazna Ahmed further stated that it was an honour for her to have been chosen to represent UNICEF as an Advocate for Children's Rights.

She went on to highlight several key projects and amendments, including policy-level changes and programmes aimed at individuals under state care, protecting children in the Maldives from all forms of abuse, and raising awareness on these issues.  First Lady Fazna Ahmed acknowledged that there is still room for improvement within these programmes, highlighting the need for broader community engagement.

Dr Safieldin commended the exemplary performance of the First Lady as a UNICEFs Advocate for Children's Rights. He acknowledged the significance of her role in the work conducted by UNICEF, especially the leadership position she fulfilled during the Covid-19 lockdown. He noted the changes to the Juvenile Justice system, affirming her tireless work collaborating with the Government towards improving the conditions for children in juvenile detention. He also recommended programmes to increase stakeholder engagement towards protecting the rights of children, and thanked her for her commitment to children's rights.

Ending the call, the First Lady thanked Dr Safieldin and wished him success in his future endeavours. She also stated that she is looking forward to working closely with his successor to continue their efforts safeguarding the rights of children in the Maldives.
