President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has visited the site of tonight’s fire incident on Boduthakurufaanu Magu. The fire severely damaged a café and the adjacent high-rise, on the east of Malé, which houses a bank and several private offices. The fire has since been contained.

The President was accompanied during his visit by Vice President Faisal Naseem. Speaking to the media present at the scene, the President thanked authorities and members of the public involved in bringing the fire under control.

Noting that emergency shelters had been set up, President Solih assured that authorities were ready to assist those affected by the fire. He further reiterated his calls on the public to heed the advice of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) against mass gatherings, citing that such actions help the spread of Covid-19 and hinder efforts to control the pandemic.

The Minister of Defense Uza. Mariya Ahmed Didi and the Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla were also at the scene of the incident.
