President Nasheed has sent a message of condemnation to the President of Sri Lanka Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa following the brutal terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team, who were touring Pakistan to play a test series with Pakistani cricket team. The President’s message reads as follows.

Quote:

“It was with deep shock and horror that I learnt of the ruthless and horrible act of terror targeted on the Sri Lankan cricket team, and the Government of the Maldives condemns this brutal and unjustified action in the strongest terms.

As long-standing historical allies and as regional partners in development, the Maldives stands firm in its commitment to the fight against the global menace of terrorism. The world has stood witness to the suffering and pain caused by terrorism, undermining the achievements of our present day as we strive towards a better global order. Most importantly, such cruelty not only threatens the democratic values our peoples have worked hard for, but also weakens the moral fabric holding our region in unity. It is thus, imperative that the international community as a whole work towards eliminating the scourge of terrorism.

Today’s attack only serves to remind us that the world can no longer linger blindly to the tragedies engulfing our innocent people. Ours is a time for committed and positive action, and at this time of national tragedy, we pledge our full support and extend our deep sympathy to you, to the people and Government of Sri Lanka. Please also convey our heartfelt condolences to the families of the injured.”
