Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, on Monday evening, attended a function held in Dharubaaruge to mark the 120th anniversary of Maldives Customs Service.
Speaking at the function, Vice President Dr Waheed underscored the important contributions of Maldives Customs Service towards the development of the country. He said in addition to its contribution to the country’s economy, Customs Service also shared a big role in national security issues.
Noting that the Customs Service has now broadened to several other regions of the country, the Vice President expressed hope that this would contribute to the economic development of the atolls.
The Vice President, in his speech, also highlighted the role of Customs Service in the efforts to control drug trafficking into the country.
At the function, the Vice President also launched Customs Strategic Plan for 2011 – 2013.
Dr Waheed also presented commemorative plaques and commemorative certificates to exemplary employees, while Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohamed Aswan presented commemorative plaques to retiring staff. The Golden Badge of Customs to employees in recognition of their services in Customs Service for 20 years was presented by the former Minister of State Principal Collector of Customs Ibrahim Rashad. He also presented commemorative plaques and certificates for employees for achieving distinctions for the Customs.
