Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs of India Mr Vayalar Ravi paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed today.
Discussions, during the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, were focused on further strengthening the close relations that exist between the Maldives and India, especially in the area of trade and commerce.
The President and the Overseas Indian Affairs Minister of India noted that both countries would benefit from a direct trade link between the Maldives and India, especially the South India.
They also discussed the President’s proposal during the last SAARC Summit to establish a transport network between coastal countries among the member of the regional organisation.
Discussing the Indian expatriate population in the Maldives, the President also said that the government was strengthening the current regulatory framework on expatriates living and working in the Maldives.
Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs of India Mr Ravi said the relations between the Maldives and India had strengthened during the last two years since the President’s assumption of office.
Vice President Dr Waheed, the President’s Political Affairs Advisor Hassan Afeef and Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports Hassan Latheef also participated in the meeting.
