President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Saudi Cancer Foundation’s mission currently visiting the Maldives.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, the President noted that the number of people diagnosed with cancer was increasing in the Maldives.

Therefore, he underscored the importance of establishing a comprehensive programme to deal with the growing problem, and sought the foundation’s assistance in formulating such a programme.

The President said a comprehensive cancer prevention programme in the Maldives should begin with an assessment of the current status of the disease in the country. This, he said, should be followed by a complete registry of people diagnosed with cancer.

President of Saudi Cancer Foundation, Dr Abdulaziz Ali Al-Turki, who is heading the foundation’s mission visiting the Maldives, briefed the President on their visit to the maldives.

During the visit, Saudi Cancer Foundation doctors held consultations with Maldivian cancer patients at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. They also facilitated workshops on principles of oncology and breast cancer treatment for IGMH doctors.

Doctors of Saudi Cancer Foundation also extended their assistance to the Maldives to train local doctors in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The meeting was also attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed and the President’s Political Affairs Advisor Hassan Afeef.
