The Cabinet today decided to establish a single civil registration database in the country. The database is to be managed and administered by the Department of National Registration.

Currently registration is done by several different government offices, including the Ministry of Health and Family, which keeps records of birth and death, Male’ Municipality, which keeps records of birth certificates, and island offices.

The Cabinet notes that this leads to discrepancies in data held by different offices and poses a number of difficulties.

The government believes consolidation of registration data administration and management will have greater benefits, including minimizing discrepancies, minimizing duplication, enhancement of data collection, and facilitation of national census.
