During his meeting with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, President Mohamed Nasheed hailed the “excellent” opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2010.
The President further congratulated the Indian government and its people for the arrangements made for the Games and expressed confidence that the Games would go smoothly.
President Nasheed also briefed the Prime Minister on the economic situation in the Maldives, which he said was now improving. However, he noted that fisheries sector was still not improving and explored possibilities of Indian assistance in doing aquaculture in the Maldives.
Prime Minister Singh said President Nasheed’s presence at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony “meant a lot to India”.
Speaking on the preparations for the upcoming SAARC Summit, the Prime Minister assured of Indian government’s commitment to any assistance to successfully hold the Summit.
The Prime Minister and the President also discussed on broadening the role of SAARC Secretary General and the SAARC Secretariat.
