President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over the environmental disaster caused by the continuing oil spill at Gulf of Mexico following the explosion of an oil rig.
In a letter to President Barack Obama of the United States of America, the President noted that this has become the worst environmental disaster ever faced by the US, and sent his sympathies to President Obama and to everyone affected the tragedy.
In his letter the President commended the manner in which the US government has been responding to the crisis.
Underscoring the vulnerability of the ecosystem to such environmental disasters, the President said:
“It also shows how necessary it has become that we pursue clean alternative energy sources.”
“In this regard, we are all encouraged by your commitment to tackling climate change and embracing clean energy”, President Nasheed said in his letter to President Obama.
President Nasheed also expressed hope the all stakeholders in the US “would recognise the urgency of shaking off fossil fuels and back your vision of clean energy future.”
