President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sent a message of condolence to Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakano of Nukunuku, following the passing away of His Majesty King Siaosi Tupou V of Tonga.
The President’s message to the Tongan Prime Minister reads as follows.

It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing away of the King of Tonga, His Majesty King Siaosi Tupou V. King Tupou’s services in guiding Tonga towards the establishment of democracy and his efforts to bring in democratic reforms to the country will always be remembered with great admiration.
As the government and the people of Tonga mourn this great national grief, the government and the people of the Maldives join me in extending our heartfelt sympathies to the family of His Majesty, as well as our sincere condolences to the people and the government of the Kingdom of Tonga.
